HONOURS EVEN IN U9'S LOCAL DERBY
Focus Ferrers Tigers U9 0 - 0 Focus Ferrers Lions
This was the return fixture which meant both teams playing at their familiar home environment at Elmwood. The snow was just holding off but both teams had to battle in the biting wind. Lions took centre and for the first few minutes put the Tigers under pressure, however exemplary defending by Connor Unwin, Mitchell Dean and later in the game, Tommy Unwin ensured that the Tigers fortress at the back remained intact. All tackles were timely and they cleared their lines. Keeper Lukas Darby put on a confident display and for much of the game his biggest challenge was keeping warm.
Starting out in midfield were Daniel Woolmer, William Putt and Daniel Whitley, Jake Miall and Harry Blenkarn came on later and all three boys battled against the strong Lions all over the park. George Bass was upfront but the solid Lions defence were keeping the Tigers locked out. For much of the first half it was end to end football with both teams cancelling each other out with their attacking and defending skills. The Tigers had two good opportunities in the first half and were but were unable to capitalise on them.
After the half time team talk the Tigers continued where they left off and played some confident football with some attacking runs. They tested Alex out with more shots on target but again, were unable to finish. Whilst the score was nil - nil, it was an excellent spectacle for the neutral with both sides showing what they are capable of. A special mention this week to our outstanding defenders Mitchell, Connor and Tommy who stopped every attack confidently and ensured we kept a clean sheet.
A great game of football and it shows how both teams have developed their footballing skills. Finally a thank you to referee Andrew Franklin for supervising the local Focus Ferrers derby and as always, fair and in control of the game.
Man of the Match: Connor "unstoppable" Unwin. it could have gone to a handful of boys, but Connor edged it by winning every ball and tackle during the game.
