The Tigers kicked off this season's cup campaign against old foes and with the aim of going one better than last season. Having played out a hard fought but fair draw last week, the return of Sporting 77 to Elmwood Park would prove to be an ideal game to kick start another hopefully successful season, although the boys had to raise their game somewhat to get the win.
With both sides looking to play football the right way, the game started with a lot of good passing moves and pace which was a welcome relief from the hard and panicky start to the season that we saw last week. 5 minutes in and the extra work put in during training proved to be the difference between going in front and staying level. A fast move down the right hand side saw Connor Unwin take on the left back and drill a strong cross into the box which George Bass forced his way on to the end of and unfortunately for the Sporting right back, his attempted clearance ended in the back of the net. Well played and well listened Connor, Defenders are like Dracula....crosses scare the living daylights out of them.
That early goal settled any nerves and the rest of the squad began to play with confidence. Keeper Lukas Darby had a quiet game thanks to the doggedness of his defenders in front of him Tommy Unwin, Mitchell Dean and Connor. The midfield unit of William Putt, Josh Jones, Daniel Woolmer&Jake Miall dominated proceedings in the middle of the park with tenacity and quality passing whilst the forward line of George Bass and then Daniel Whitley both honed their new "space awareness" skills to cause havoc in the Sporting defence.
The second goal came in much the same way as the first with a good ball into the box from the flank, the Sporting 77 defender attempted a clearance and steered the ball into his own net with the help of the crossbar. The second half was similar to the first with the Tigers dominating possession and moving the ball around with well timed passes and runs. The amount of possession versus goals scored is still proving frustrating for the managers but the 3rd goal finally came from another well worked move through the middle of the park. William Putt picked up the ball on the half way line and put a great ball through to Daniel Whitley, who composed himself before slotting a fine shot into the keeper’s bottom right hand corner. A fantastically well worked
Man of the Match: Josh "Giant" Jones. Strong all round performance winning everything, both on the ground and in the air.
