Last league game for the boys as they travelled to Springfield on a blustery morning. A full squad to choose from against a Springfield side who have had a difficult year. The start of the game saw the Springfield team make the running as part time keeper Lucas saw several dangerous balls come at him. Andrew made some good runs down the left but the Springfield side seemed untroubled. Slowly the boys found there feet and Jack started to pick up the ball in midfield and Callum advanced from defence. A sweet exchange with Callum and Andrew saw Tom put through on goal but his early shot spun wide of the posts. The opener came on 9 mins when a clever ball from Jack into the area allowed Andrew to steer a neat finish past the keeper. The second came soon after with Ben B finding Tom who dribbled past two defenders before Ben P took over and beat two more and crashed a shot into the top corner. Tom had seen plenty of the ball and his reward came when a great pass from Jamie at the back set him free on goal and he finished in great style curving it past the goalie. Callum was having a strong game from the back and he again took up an advanced role to fire in on goal , the keeper could only parry and Ben Bs return was tapped in at the far post by Ben P. After the break there was a lot more energy from the boys and some early shots came in from "The Fella" , now back out on pitch and Ben B. A swift move on the right saw Ben B fire over a firm low cross which Nathan managed to get on the end of for a deserved first goal of the season. The tempo was sustained as Ben P then added his third after a smart bit of play from captain James in a little cameo role today. Lucas was scrapping for the ball and showed tremendous tenacity to hook in number 7 from inside the area. Some further substitutions were made and all of the boys were now coming strong with Jack pulling on the keepers Jersey for the first time. The final blow came when a powerful run and shot from Andrew was diverted in by Tom past the Springfield keeper. The ref blew up a full 5 minutes early and the Lions season was brought to an end with confirmation of their runners up berth in the Blackwater and Dengie, Dengie division. It was also the last game in charge for coach John Dumas who has led the side since September 2007 when they embarked on their mini soccer experience. The boys have enjoyed great success with league stats of played 48, 35 wins 10 draws and just 3 defeats. The boys now move into 9 a side soccer next year and would all wish to thank John again for his coaching and guidance in these important early years. Well done boys and thank you John.
