Last league cup group game for the boys and they were facing a Liverpool type situation with further progress in the competition reliant on other results as well. The Elmwood pitch had held up well in all of the rain and the boys began in good style.Nathan began up front and made a fine run down the right after a couple of minutes with his cross just missing a Lions head. Soon after, an excellent Callum corner found the target as Ben P headed just wide. However drama soon struck as Captain James was taken ill in goal.Having only just passed a late fitness test he was clearly too unwell to continue and in the reshuffle Jamie grabbed the green jersey. At the back Ben B was making his first start in defence and was showing well with some marauding runs and trademark aggression. The Lions were well on top despite the disruption and Callum was seeing plenty of the ball on the right flank. Some good link up play saw Tom and Andrew through for a series of chances but the Silver End number 3 was a fine defender.Shots came in from Nathan and Ben P but the score remained goalless. As the  half drew to an end, Jamie made a very sharp save from the rangey Silver number 7 and Andrew powered through from the back with just the keeper to beat. He got his shot away but unfortunately the goalkeeper stuck out a leg and it span wide. After the break Tom made a great run down the right outpacing two defenders before crossing for Lucas who just failed to connect. There was definitely more space, and Jack was starting to release his front men with some intelligent passes. It was however  "The Fella" who gave the fans something to cheer as he wriggled into the area after a nice exchange between Ben B and Callum and his shot was forced past the keeper. A collective sigh of relief, saw the Lions then up the tempo. Ben P started to parade his skills and set Tom away down the left. He cut in on goal but saw his shot go just wide. He then had a fantastic chance to score with his left foot but screwed it wide. Andrew then found his range and blasted in a couple of fierce shots that narrowly missed. It was 2-0 when a fine run from Lucas saw him pull the ball back for Ben B who fizzed in a low shot that hit the post and spun back over the line. A fine spot for Lee the ref on a muddy goal line and further evidence of  what a bright  young talent he is. Jamie had enjoyed long periods of inactivity in goal but from the 40th minute on showed he has lost none of his sharpness. Two great saves with his feet were followed by a fabulous tip over from a 25yd Silver End piledriver. The game drifted to an end with the Lions still pushing,  and despite requests of the ref to blow up ,  his statutory 3 mins extra time allowed Ben P to jink expertly  past 2 men and finish cooly at the near post. The boys could do no more than win this match and showed great qualities in both battling and playing some really good football. Well done boys.
