LIONS HIT STICKY PATCH

Great Notley Knights u10s  1
Focus Ferrers Lions u10s    1

League cup action for the boys and the exposed Notley arena saw a 9.30 ko. The boys and parents often struggle with the early start but on this occassion the Lions  immediately set the pace. Lucas had successive shots on 3 and 4 minutes after nice work from both Tom and Ben P. The efforts then became more fierce as Ben P hit the bar with a great right foot shot and while  the plastic  was still wobbling Jack repeated the feat with a shot from the edge of the area. Chances were coming thick and fast but with nothing to show. Nathan and Callum were at the back but able to keep a high line as the Knights offered little in response. Lucas was seeing a lot of the ball and had several efforts that tested the keeper. There was seemingly only one team likely to score but remarkably it was  the Knights who struck. A move down the right saw the ball whipped across and a crisp left foot shot left debutant goalie James with no chance. No need to panic, and the Lions chances continued with Tom and Andrew narrowly missing with chance after chance. Ben P thundered in another entry in the crossbar challenge but it still remained 1-0 at the break.
It was not too long before the boys were even as Jack found a sweet pass to Lucas who saw Andrew in space and picked him out. In on goal Andrew made no mistake. At 1-1 it seemed inevitable that the Lions would kick on, but it was not to be. James began to face pressure in goal and produced an amazing fingertip save to tip the ball over from a rasping knight drive. Lions chances came and went and from an excellent Ben B cross Lucas was faced with an open goal, but the Knights keeper somehow clawed the ball away. Ben P and Jamie started a series of moves down the left but the goal would not come. Andrew made another high speed run on goal but again the ball squirmed wide.  At the death Nathan made a rare foray forward but his shot also missed the target. It finished all square and despite enjoying all of the possession the Lions slightly hurried attempts at goal really let the Knights off the hook. Lots of individual skill on show but perhaps not up to the usual collective energy levels. Well done boys and special commendation to James as his positional roadshow  took in another stop between the sticks.
