LIONS DEN DEFEAT FOR FOCUS
Focus Ferrers Lions u10s 0
Dunmow Rhodes Lions u10s 3The Lions returned to action after the enforced winter break and found themselves up against a Dunmow side sitting on top of the league. A heavy pitch saw a delayed start, as Lee the ref was forced to borrow some vintage football boots in order to remain upright. The boys began in strong style with Ben P making some surging runs and Andrew testing both the centre backs. The Dunmow side struggled for early possession and Ben B was enjoying plenty of the ball on the right. The early pressure should have brought a goal but slowly Dunmow started to find their feet. Jamie made two fine stops as the game quickly turned and James was called upon to make some trademark sliding tackles as he patrolled the back line. Despite the surface, there was some good quality play and both sides looked to pass whenever possible. It was on 12 mins that Dunmow took the lead as the ball came loose on the edge of the area and the Dunmow striker was given too much time to fire a hard low shot to Jamies right. Thereafter the boys held there own and Nathan brought the ball out with good effect. Tom was now on up front and as ever looked to make some early passes but the slight uphill gradient and the sticky surface made supporting midfield runs all the more difficult. Just before half time Ben P and Lucas linked up and Ben released Tom in on goal. With a lot still to do and perhaps too much time, his firm shot was parried by the Dunmow number 1. After the break there was hope of a revival . Callum was now in defence and looked assured as he set Andrew away on the right. Jack continued to tackle strongly in midfield but there was a lack of penetration as genuine chances were hard to find. Andrew crossed for Tom who directed a header just wide and then Ben B and Lucas combined well for a snap shot from Tom. Unfortunately Dunmow made it safe when another loose ball came to the physically strong number 7 who powered in a shot giving Jamie no chance. The game opened up and the Lions continued to battle but it was the more organised Dunmow side who always looked the more threatening. The third goal came some 10 minutes from the end and from this pont on the boys tried to salvage a well deserved consolation. It was clearly not there day as Andrews cross shot on 45 mins rebounded off the post.
A deserved victory for Dunmow with an impressive team performance. The Lions can take many positives from their first outing in over 5 weeks but must now look to finish the season strongly as their mini soccer experience comes to an end. Well done boys.
