LIONS IN SUPER ELMWOOD FINALE
Focus Ferrers Lions u10s 6
Maldon Saints u10s 1
Last home game of the season for the boys, and the last ever match for them at Elmwood School as they move on to somewhat larger pastures. Maldon were lying one place below the Lions in the league and a difficult match became all the harder in a torrential downpour. With James in Ireland it was Nathan and Ben P at the back with Jamie between the sticks and it was they who saw the early ball as the Saints made a strong start. The Saints number 12 brought a smart save from Jamie on 3 mins but then the boys responded. Tom was fed by Andrew and Ben B and just steered a shot wide. Jack then beat several challenges and set Andrew free but his flicked shot was turned round by the Saints number 1. Both sides were managing in the elements far better than expected, and certainly more smoothly than Martin who was tussling with his inverted brolly for much of the opening period. The match was very even and it took an exceptional goal to break the deadlock. Jack again won the midfield ball and released Tom who resisted the firm Saints challenge as he rode two tackles and clipped a left foot shot into the bottom corner. Within 5 minutes it was 2-0 as a mazy run from Andrew down the left saw him sweep the ball across for the trademark Ben B finish. Maldon did not buckle and a corner frrom the right was met with a towering header into the top corner. The match then swept from one end to the other at tremendous pace. Ben P and Nathan were advancing forward and the midfield were intelligently covering. Lucas and Callum were now on and there were new problems for the Saints. It was 3-1 when Ben P again came forward and beat 2 men before side footing a shot in on goal which trickled through the keepers legs. The second half was even better as the Lions displayed some total football. Lucas made it 4-1 when the ball was cleared by the Saints and he used great skill to loft a looping shot over the keeper. Soon after it was 5 as an excellent Callum cross was met by "the fella" again with a stooping header. The Saints battled throughout and wobbled the bar with a cracking shot, but it was the Lions day. Callum , Nathan and Ben B all had further chances but the final sign off came from Andrew who cut in from the left and steered home a shot into the bottom corner. Thanks to Mitchell for refereeing with a damp whistle. A great game from both sides and a fitting end to a wonderful 3 years at Elmwood for the boys. Special thanks to the school for making the pitch and facilities available and well done boys for a scintilating performance from one and all.
