LIONS AVOID PIRANHA BITE

Burnham Ramblers Piranhas u10s  0
Focus Ferrers Lions    u10s 1

A return to Burnham for the boys, scene of their cup final success earlier in the year albeit in slightly colder conditions. The tiny pitch was going to need precise play and the boys did not let their loyal supporters down.Tom was put through by Ben B on 3 mins and just failed to wrap his foot around the ball. Within a minute Lucas had a firm shot that was parried by the Piranhas keeper. The right side was proving very productive and Callum was switching play in fine style from his central midfield posting. The Piranhas are always a tough nut to crack, and amongst general Lions pressure they still posed a  regular goal threat. Jamie pulled off a great save on 15 mins and from  several corners the Burnham boys looked dangerous. James and Nathan were slightly more forward than in recent weeks and they were both strong in starting attacks as well as defending.Tom was operating on his own up front but made a series of strong runs bringing in the attacking midfielders.  The opener came on 23 mins when Jack picked up the ball on the right and swept a magnificent ball across the pitch for Lucas. With still much to do the blue booted "fella" pinged home a left foot shot into the bottom corner. On balance it was a desrved lead, and after the break the boys continued with strong pressure. Jack floated in a clever left foot shot on 27 mins that just shaved the post. Soon after, great work from Ben B and Ben P put in Tom with only the keeper to beat. His shot could not have been harder but the Piranha number 1 pulled off an incredible save tipping the ball over. The Burnham number 7 had a dangerous left foot and mid way through the half he broke through on goal and pulled the trigger, it was great work from  Nathan who came to the rescue with a last gasp block which sent the ball spinning wide. The tireless Tom was replaced by James who came on to terrorise the female centre half. The strategy worked, as he again showed great awareness and set up chances for Jack, Ben P and  the impressive Callum. Several scrambled melees followed with Jack taking a David Haye approach in the midfield battling with several larger opponents at the same time. The second goal would just  not come despite some really creative work from the midfied engine room, and a series of Lions corners saw the clock run down. The final chance came in injury time, that was for once of a reasonable length. The elusive  Ben P was put in by Callum and Ben B and cut in from the right,  his fierce shot skidded across the bendy bar but it was not to be. A hard fought encounter with a deserved victory and some great all round play from all of the team. Well done boys.
