LIONS IN DISCOVERY MODE
Great Notley Knights u10s 2
Focus Ferrers Lions u10s 2
A return to Notley for the boys and this time to the 3G astro turf of the Braintree Discovery centre. A fantastic surface that would have graced any front room saw the boys leap into a 2nd minute lead as Ben P carved open some space on the right and his looping cross was only parried by the Knights keeper and James volleyed it home. The boys seemed well suited to the conditions and Jamie and Nathan were cleaning up all of the through balls and managing to come forward themselves. The Knights were limited to some long range pot shots and these were dealt with very confidently by this weeks guest keeper Callum. Lucas was seeing lots of the ball and his excellent close control saw some space open up. James had another fine effort that was beaten away and Jack was making a series of strong runs down the left. It would appear that the Knights use the surface frequently as they started to put together some very neat passing moves with the ball never leaving the deck. The Lions had slightly tailed off and it was a little against the run of play when the second came. James again turned the last defender and drove out to the flank. A clever exchange with Lucas led to another quality cross coming in. This time the keeper could do nothing and Jack bundled the ball over. The Knights remained very much in the game and several breaks were made. Callum turned a firm shot round and the boys then defended a series of corners. The Knights pulled one back on 21 mins when a sharp one two put the number 10 in to slide it past Callum who did not stand a chance. The Lions immediately kicked on and Andrew just missed the target with a firm shot. Ben B then broke well and set Lucas free on goal however the attentive referee decided the 25 minute mark had been reached before "the fella"could pull the trigger ! The second half began with Nathan up front with Andrew pushing forward from midfield. The old combination of Jamie and James were back at the heart of defence and Jamie was growing in confidence as he distributed the ball extremely well.Further chances came as Andrew broke with electric pace down the right. A mixture of crosses and shots just failed to connect and the lead was looking a little too slender. It was right to be concerned as on 33 mins the Knights threw in a dangerous cross from the left and it was met with a glancing blow that sent Callum completely the wrong way. Once more he had no chance at all and it was now very much game on. Ben P statrted to probe and Jack, Ben B and Lucas were looking to find a way through the Knights defence. Andrew was set free on a couple of occassions but the Knights number 1 was keeping everything out. Time was running out perhaps more quickly than we thought as Andrew delivered a whipped left foot cross which Lucas seemed poised to meet on the volley. However the ref seemed to be once more in his own time zone and blew up while the menancing cross was in mid flight. The lack of any stoppage time may have been a concession to the cold weather or perhaps some last minute Christmas shopping requirements but it finished 2-2 nevertheless. A new experience for the boys on a superb artificial surface and the discovery that there is yet another keeper amongst them, many thanks Callum.
