LIONS PASS THE TEST

Focus Ferrers Lions   u10s  5
Valley Green  Knights u10s 3

Back home for the boys and the Elmwood pitch was in great nick for this holiday fixture against old adversaries Valley Green. The boys knew that passing was the order of the day and they set to their task from the off. James started up front and immediately caused problems for the Valley defence pulling the ball wide and crossing for Andrew who just missed with his snap shot. It was the right that was the most productive area and after 3 mins it was a wonderful combination with Jack and James that again put in Andrew for a good chance. The opener was an early contender for goal of the season as Ben P brought the ball out of defence and swept it wide to Jack who fizzed over a crisp cross for Andrew to step inside the last defender and fire home a low shot into the corner. Callum and Nathan at the back were very much occupied as the Valley number 9 again proved to be a very tricky opponent. It was he who levelled it up on 10 mins as he turned both defenders and slotted home a cracking left foot shot past Jamie who had no chance at all.The balance of the half saw some great football and a Ben P shot was just tipped over , while Jamie again made some important saves from the Valley attack. James was a constant threat up front, and he again found intelligent space on 17 mins when he muscled past the left back and headed for goal. His low near post cross was deflected in off a defender and the boys were back in front. After the orange break Tom immediately got the boys going with a mazy touchline run and pull back which Andrew just failed to finish. Callum then surged forward in a series of forceful runs but his powerful shots just missed the mark. It was 3-1 when Ben B took up  a great position on the right, his crosses had already caused problems and this one  was so effective it went straight  in , looping over the excellent Valley keeper. The boys were now sweeping forward and on 34 mins Ben P cut in from the right as well, and his low cross again hit a Valley defender for the second og of the game. Nathan and Tom renewed their strike partnership of 07/08 and  combined well, with Nathan hitting  the bar with a  firm shot on 41 mins. On 47 mins it was 5-1 as Nathan crossed with his left for Tom to squeeze in his shot at the far post. The boys began to think of half term lie ins, but Valley were far from finished and took full advantage of the Ferguson like injury time played by Lee the ref. A crisp finish was powered past Jamie on 50 mins and another determined effort was forced home on 58 ! A great game enjoyed by both sets of fans and some great Lions football particularly in the first half. Well done boys.
