LIONS BOUNCE BACK IN STYLE
Maldon Saints u10s 2
Focus Ferrers Lions u10s 6
This League match was a return fixture for the boys following last weeks narrow cup loss. The tight Maldon ground was sure to lead to a fast paced match and from the start the Lions were on their game.Ben P was sitting in front of Nathan and Callum at the back and was dictating play from the off. The biggest problem facing the boys was a lack of pressure in the ball. The first "pudding" was replaced only for the second one to have a slow puncture as well.Play was suspended while air was restored and the added bounce proved crucial. On 10 mins Ben B found excellent space on the right and set the ball back for Ben P who span in a lovely cross for James to steer in with his chest. An immediate return for the Captain back in his striking role of last season. The boys consolidated and Lucas was putting in a fine shift down the left evading a number of tigerish challenges. However the Saints again showed their strength and equalised on 16 mins with a determined move finished off by the dangerous number 8. The balance of the half saw some fine keeping from Jamie who continues to look increasingly confident in the sticks, and some very impressive defending from Callum who was the player of the first half. 1-1 at the changeover and the second half saw the boys cut loose. Jack slipped into midfield and immediately set both Tom and Andrew free and it was Tom who outpaced everybody to bury a great shot into the bottom corner. Andrew then had a number of impressive bursts from his new midfield role, and just missed with successive chances. The 3rd goal came when James picked up a Saints clearance and hammered it back with interest, the now very hard ball bounced straight over the keeper into the net.It was 4-1 when Ben P and Jack skilfully switched play to the right and Ben B continued his rich run of scoring with a great high shot. The boys were now rampant and the pace was very good to see. Andrew grabbed the fifth with a very strong run and finish, before the Saints pulled a second back with a neat move. The referee allowed a very generous period of injury time and Tom and Andrew made the most of it working some magic in the corner and crossing for Lucas to sweep in the half volley. Some very strong performances all round , well done boys we were proud of you.
