LIONS FIND SAINTS TOO STRONG

Focus Ferrers Lions u10s  2

A return to cup action for the boys and it was an early start for all parties at the Elmwood arena. The Lions fans feared a sluggish start and the boys did not let them down, as it was the Saints who immediately set the pace. Jamie was called into action straight away and it was no surprise when the opposition took the lead after just 4 mins when the ball remained in the area for rather too long. It did prompt some action and stories of last nights  X factor were quickly forgotten as the boys got into the match.Tom and Ben B linked very well down the right and a chance for Ben just missed. Nathan and James at the back were however still on high alert as the well drilled Saints set about a series of strong attacks.Jack was sniping in midfield with Ben B and it was not too long before Ben P joined the action to add some support.A clever long range shot from Andrew just drifted wide but then the Saints went down the other end and brought a tremendous one on one save from Jamie which kept it to just 1-0 at half time. The second half was a thrilling encounter. Lucas came on for the boys and showed some great skill and pace and began to cause trouble down the left with Ben P. On 29 mins the equaliser came as Ben P and Callum battled away showing great determination in the tackle then crossing for Ben B to crown his bithday week with a simple tap in. Two mins later the Lions were in front, as Ben P again crossed from the left for Tom to skilfully deflect a first time shot into the net.The Saints are a strong and tenacious team and they responded in excellent style. A fine double save from Jamie seemed to have kept them out but at the third attempt a low driven shot made it 2-2. It was now compelling viewing as both sides were going for victory. Callum had some very good long range efforts and James was turning in a captains display at the back.It was however the Saints who shaded it as in a messy goalmouth melee their number 2 prodded home what turned out to be the winner 5 mins from time. A fine game and the Lions will have an immediate chance to respond, with a league encouter with the Saints next week. Well done to Maldon and hard luck to the Lions who will be well aware of where they need to improve.
