LIONS GAIN HARD FOUGHT VICTORY

Focus Ferrers Lions u10s  2
Burnham Ramblers Piranhas u10s 0

Third game of the season for the boys and once again the opponents seemed to have the edge on sheer size. It appeared to have an immediate impact as the Piranhas forced their way into the boys area and a looping header clipped the bar. The Lions came back strongly and Ben B combined with Andrew down the right to cross for Lucas, who had a snap shot deflected round. Pressure then became sustained with Callum again looking strong at the back and releasing Ben P for some powerful runs down the left. In one chaotic melee the  Lions hit either  the bar or post 3 times in the space of 10 seconds with Andrew ,Ben B and Lucas all having a go. Still the Piranhas were dangerous and after 15 mins a firm shot whistled past Jamies post. Nathan was looking to start attacks from the back and Lucas was enjoying one of his strongest games for some time with some Lennon like mazy runs. Tom and Jack were introduced and futher shots came and went but it remained goaless at the break with some treatment required for Ben B who picked up a Piranha bite on his ankle. The second half saw much the same, as the Burnham team remained strong and very organised.Tom made a number of intelligent runs down the right and floated in some lovely crosses but there was nobody free to meet them.Ben P found similar space down the left and crosses into the area just failed to reach a Lions boot. James was urging his team on, and both he and Nathan pushed forward. Nathan had a good long range effort go just wide and  both  Jack and Callum had efforts blocked. The goal came on 45 mins with Ben P lobbing the last defender and setting free the fleet footed  Andrew who arrowed in on goal and finished calmly. It was far from over as this brought the Burnham team out and they forced the Lions back. Jamie was suddenly called on for a succession of crosses and corners and he literally secured victory with a fantastic save with his legs which seemed destined for the net. For the first time this season the game was suddenly "stretched", and Jack and Callum exchanged passes before releasing Tom who sprinted free and smashed in a powerful shot which the keeper could not hold leaving him a deserved tap in. By common agreement one of the best Lions games for some time and a real bonus for the spectators. Well done boys.
