In the first match of another League cup campaign the Lions travelled to Jam country on a warm Sunday morning. The home team started brightly, and James and Nathan at the back were soon aware of some very direct attacking play. The T men had the early possession but it was the Lions who took the lead. A Ben B corner pinged off several bodies before "Jeff The Ref " blew for a hand to ball contact. Andrew grabbed the chance with glee and blasted the penalty home. It was a bonus, as the Tiptree side were strong and quick in the challenge. Jack and Ben B were in a 2 man midfield and were having to work very hard as the Tiptree side attacked with speed. The equaliser came on 15 mins and a smart finish it was, giving Jamie no chance at all. The Lions seemed a little one paced and despite seeing more of the ball it was some distance from the slick passing of last week. Tom was drifting to the right to pick up some space but the support play was largely missing and on 21 mins Tiptree went ahead. A Lions corner was grabbed by the keeper who he fired a huge kick which bounced over Nathan and left in the number 10 who finished very well in the corner. It was 2-1 at half time and the boys were well aware that they had to improve. The second half saw immediate change as the sharpness and urgency returned. Ben P began to link defence and attack and passes found a blue shirt rather than a white. It was Ben P who grabbed the equaliser on 38 mins. Clever work by Ben B and James saw Ben P appear in the area and he cheekily beat the keeper at his near post when a cross seemed more likely.Within a minute the boys were in front as Tom and Lucas found Ben B who squeezed in a low shot that was just too much for the Tiptree keeper. The boys were now playing far better and Lucas and Jack started to work some patterns down the left. Nathan also enjoyed a mazy run from the back almost putting in Andrew. The fourth goal came after a sweet exchange from Callum and Lucas saw Andrew set free on the left. Ben B made great strides to keep pace but Andrew evaded 2 challenges and swept in his second of the game. Chances were now coming but still Tiptree were battling. Jamie dived in bravely at the feet of the Tiptree number 9 and James made a trademark sliding challenge , much to the delight of the Lions fans. The fifth goal was another individual effort from Andrew. Set free after smart work from Jack he ran away from the last defender and bore down on goal. Remaining calm he side stepped the keeper and tapped in for a deserved hat trick. Right at the death Jamie pulled off the save of the day diving full length to hold onto a strong shot. The scoreline shows a resounding victory but it was only due to a very strong second half performance and as ever the Lions will have learnt much from this game. Well done boys.
