LIONS SHOW NO MERCY

Focus Ferrers Lions u9s  11
Notley Youth Hawks u9s  1

Back on the road for the boys and the well worn route to the always friendly Notley club and the legendary referee Colin.A distinctly shaky start for the Lions as they again seemed slightly slow to the ball, and it took a more direct approach to open the account.Jamie sent a long high ball forward into the Hawks area and Ben P bravely jumped in front of the keeper for a rare headed goal. The Hawks were probably sick of the sight of Focus teams having met the Tigers last week and this prompted a fierce response for the balance of the half.Alex made a superb save on 10 mins to stop an equaliser and the opponents were competing for every ball.As the half wore on Lucas and Ben B found some more space and more chances were created.Nathan continues to grow into his defensive role and he showed much greater confidence in bringing the ball out from the back with some excellent distribution..Such was his confidence that his powerful half volley smashed into referee Colin sending him to the floor.Jack was now on and his clever through ball put in the fleetfooted Tom to cut past the last defender and bury the second on 25.These are always long days in Notley with lots of loose bootlaces, and in the umpteenth minute of additional time Lucas finished a nice move to make it 3-0 at the break. No need for the hairdryer,it was windy enough, but some half time encouragement saw a sharper Lions performance after the oranges.Ben B rammed home a fine low shot to make it 4-0 on 30 mins and Tom added another a few minutes later.Callum had seen a lot of the ball and was now cutting inside with purpose and he scored a fine goal laid on by Tom before returning the compliment within a minute as Tom grabbed his hatrick. James was on at the back and was showing some real power in defence and again ever keen to grab the first career goal.A fine header from a corner narrowly missed. The Hawks fans are a terrific bunch and they raised the ramshackle pavillion roof (which is not hard) when Ben B showed his "Box to Box" qualities by getting on the end of a cross and sticking one past Alex into his own net to make it 7-1.The Lions finished strongly with a further brace from Callum to bring up his hatrick (one a trademark goal busting pen) and Lucas and Tom brought matters to an end in the ever long 50th minute.Great individual skills from the Lions but they know that there is more to come when the teamwork really clicks in.Well done boys.
