Another strong performance from the boys as they returned to league action. A wonderful spring morning saw the surprise return of Lucas to the team after a quicker than expected recovery from injury. It was Mayland who began the stronger as they showed some neat passing football.Alex was immediately involved and made some confident early takes. The two Bens, "B " and "P" were in midfield and soon got to the pace of the game. Some swift passing set Tom away in the eigth minute and it was only strong defending that forced him wide. James was back up front and was holding up the ball with great skill but was often struggling to find some options for the lay off. Jamie and Nathan at the back were encouraged to defend high, and again demonstrated excellent vision in the way they brought the ball out. Despite some keenly fought midfield battles chances were scarce.Jack and the returning Lucas came on and this proved to be a tactical masterstroke.Jack got his foot in on some good challenges and switched play both right and left.It was the right wing that brought the opener as Lucas skipped past two tackles, and fizzed over a pacey cross that the Viper defender volleyed into his own net. The second half saw the boys open up.Within a minute of the break Ben P had made it 2-0 with a strong run and shot. Then a Lucas double on 33 and 37 minutes put the Lions out of sight. The second goal in particular was a sweet left foot volley from a Ben B cross. Tom was waging his own battle with the Vipers keeper and hit the post on 40 mins and had further chances that narrowly missed. In the end it was great teamwork that got him on the scoresheet as Jack weaved some "Arshavin" style magic on the byline and crossed for Tom to bury the fifth. Within a minute Tom had his second as he swept home after superb work from Jamie marauding forward. It would be wrong to think this was a procession as Alex made his second excellent dive at the feet of the Vipers forward with the ref ignoring calls for a penalty. Another clean sheet for the boys and some very slick fotball that is now prospering on the firmer pitches.Well done boys.
