At last a weekend of football after the frost and rain that both teams have endured since December. The short trip to Elmwood saw the pitch in very good condition and parents and players eager for some action in the biting cold. The Lions made a very strong start which saw them grab the early initiative.Ben B was switching play well and Tom began what was to prove a very hard battle with the Tigers defence. Lucas had overcome some footwear difficulties (thanks to Nik for the loan), and was put up front in an attacking formation, but an early goal never looked that likely. The well organised Tigers gained more and more of the ball and started to put Alex under pressure.James and Jamie remained resolute at the back but needed great concentration to keep the Tigers at bay.Ben P was seeking to link defence and attack but as soon as he or Lucas slipped a tackle the Tigers closed them down.A succession of Tigers corners were delivered with power and accuracy by William, and Alex and his defence were at full strength. The Lions did break out and Ben B was usually the one prompting the attacks.Lucas did manage to wriggle past the Tigers on occassions but there were only the few half chances to note.Just before half time a 2 year old brought the match to an unexpected halt with a mazy run across the Tigers area.Fortunately the offending youth was scooped up and ejected from the ground. After the break it was again the Tigers who dominated .Nathan and Callum joined the fray but any combination play was again broken down by Conor and his colleagues.A Callum cross shot was palmed away by Lukas and some minor pressure exerted.Jack was again continuing his rich vein of form both making tackles and taking on defenders with some excellent close control. However it was penetration that was lacking and it was Alex who remained the busiest Lion on the pitch, making a series of excellent takes from some difficult high balls.Nathan was replaced midway through the half by Tom but it was all hands to the pump as the well drilled Tigers kept up the pressure to the last. The 0-0 result did not reflect the excitement of the match and once again both teams showed that they contain a very talented group of players. Many thanks to referee Andy Franklin for kindly keeping order. A real battle for the Lions, well done to both teams.
