BRAVE LIONS LOSE BIG CAT DERBY

Focus Ferrers Lions  u9s   1
Focus Ferrers Tigers u9s   2

The fireworks were reserved for Sunday morning as the Focus Ferrers u9s teams battled it out in a truly memorable local derby. With Elmwood school becoming the San Siro for the day, both teams put on a great show for the two sets of fervent supporters. It was the Tigers who seized the initiative as some great interplay put in Jake for the opener on 3 mins as he fired past his playground pal Alex who had little chance to keep it out.Ben B was in central midfield and was covering vast amounts of ground as he tried to spur the boys on.A snap shot from Nathan narrowly missed and then Tom was edged out by some strong Tigers defending. The Tigers were really on their game and James and Jamie remained alert at the back  to keep out the threatening through balls. As ever Jack was looking to get on the ball and he started to find more space down the left as the half wore on.Callum took over from Nathan and found some good positions wide right. Some flashing shots went in but it looked as though 1-0 at the break was beckoning. However the Tigers had one last surge before the oranges and a high spinning  ball  into the Lions area saw George react quickly and head the ball over Alex. After the break the Lions showed great spirit despite feeling the pace with 2 players missing on holiday.A mazy Nathan run down the left saw a threatening cross and Ben B struck in a firm shot from central midfield. The Lions were now shading possession with Tom taking up some more attacking positions and James and Jamie bringing the ball out of defence.Callums rasping shot was tipped over by the Tigers keeper and a series of corners were not really capitalised on.The Tigers  however remained a threat, and continued to look for the ball in behind the boys back line. The heavy surface was allowing more space and with 8 minutes left Tom picked up the ball on the edge of the area and cut inside 2 defenders to pull one back.A grandstand finish followed with every ball battled for.James sustained an injury but in gladiator style got up to lead his side for one last push.A smart move at the close involving Jack and Tom put in Nathan but a great challenge from Connor saw the ball slide out for a corner. The final whistle saw a respectful appreciation for both teams.A very well deserved win for the Tigers following a  really strong display.Well done Lions, great team spirit showed and the game played in the right way.
