LIONS UP TO THE CHALLENGE
Focus Ferrers Lions u9s 5
Sporting 77 Pumas u9s 2
A very wet affair as the Lions met the Pumas in this top of the table encounter.Early possession was with the boys, albeit the Pumas remained the physically more dominant, with some very large 8 & 9 year olds in their side. The Pumas took the lead on 6 mins after a smart through ball skidded past both James and Jamie with the attacker giving Alex no chance with a clever lob.The boys responded well and made great efforts to keep the ball on the deck.Jack and Ben B were again combining well and Tom was working the line superbly. The equaliser came on 13 mins when Tom and Jack again linked well for the ball to be fed wide to Callum who did brilliantly to keep the spinning ball on target and force it home.Within 3 mins Callum hit another tremendous shot which brought a fantastic save from the Pumas keeper turning it on to the bar.Jamie and James were relishing the chance for some big tackles and again demonstrated how they can both now play it out from the back with ease.A historic moment on 17 mins as a smart Ben B corner saw the ball fall back to captain James who thumped a 25 yd shot into the bottom corner for his first ever competitive goal.Sporting fought back and before half time they also wobbled the Lions bar with Alex just getting a hand to a cross shot. After the break Nathan found his feet in midfield and opened his account for the season with another effective low shot that outfoxed the keeper.A two goal margin was short lived however as the Pumas sent a long range volley into orbit with the wicked bounce giving Alex no chance at all.The Puma fans literally went wild as a comeback loomed. However the next spell saw some proper quality from the boys.Ben P was having an excellent game in midfield balancing passes with his trademark silky dribbles and Lucas, leading the line on his own, was causing further problems.Nathan was switching play with some nicely weighted crossfield balls and one of these put in Callum who battled really well to pressurise the Puma back line. The committed keeper was left stranded as Lucas swept the fourth into the open net. After 48 mins Jack and Ben B worked a nice triangle for Tom to cut loose on the edge of the area.He passed two defenders with ease before squeezing the ball in at the far post. The conditions had truly tested both sides but the boys again proved up to the challenge.Enjoy half term ,well done boys.
