RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN LIONS ROAR

Focus Ferrers Lions u9s     2
Sporting 77 Pumas  u9s     1

The T shirts of the previous week were replaced by raincoats as the Lions proved too strong for an excellent Pumas side in this very entertaining but wet match.A first home fixture this season at Elmwood school saw an excellent surface for the boys passing game. After just 3 mins a nice combination between Nathan,Jack and Lucas put in Ben B who fired a firm shot just wide. The boys had the early possession and were making great use of it with some excellent crosses.James and Jamie were in tandem at the back and while the Pumas hinted at the odd break there was little getting through.Jamie was keeping the central berth while James continued with his trademark runs from defence giving the Pumas plenty to worry about. On 9 minutes Jack pulled a wonderful "cruyf" turn (not that he would know who he was ) and released Ben B and Lucas as they attacked with speed.Bens shot again narrowly missed. Some mid half changes saw the arrival of Callum and Tom and the switch delivered, as Tom laid the ball off on the edge of the area and Callum curled in a great shot for the opening goal.A second should have followed as Lucas missed from close range and Ben B just pulled another shot wide. The misses could have been costly as on the stroke of half time the Pumas hoofed the ball high in the air from a throw in and it crashed down onto Alexs bar.The second half was played in torrential rain but the quality of football was maintained.Callum made it 2-0 a minute after the break when he picked up another smart lay off from Tom and "leathered" it into the top corner for the goal of the season so far.To their credit the Pumas continued to battle.Nathan was now in defence and he made a number of decisive tackles and headers as the Lions were pegged back.Ben P was now in a midfield role, and with the help of Lucas and Jack they were working hard to match the physically larger Pumas.Alex was benefitting from his goalkeeping gloves as everything was sticking including a stunning take at full length from a Pumas cross. The Lions still had chances as Ben P also hit the bar and a Ben B cross from the right almost went in off a Puma. Some concern was caused  a minute from the end when Alex made an excellent stop from a Pumas shot only for the rebound to be fired home.Perhaps the margin should have been more but a truly top class performance from both sides.Well done boys.
