RANGERS EDGE LOCAL DERBY...
Despite something of an ‘off week’ for the Rangers last Sunday, it didn’t take any encouragement to get the boys fired up for this local derby against friends at Woodham Radars. The return of Marcus in goal reinstalled confidence throughout the Focus side as the team reverted to its more familiar set up.
Much of the early action saw Focus Ferrers camped in the Radars half as the midfield traded tackles and Rangers probed looking for the breakthrough. Radars were working hard to keep the Rangers attack at bay and proving difficult to break down. The heavy pitch was not kind to those young legs, but neither team tired easily. Hard work by Joshua Kitchen, Daniel Caples and Joshua Hewes in the midfield ensured that Rangers maintained the pressure, and were rewarded on 15 minutes as Jack Allen latched on to a Benjamin Conway through ball and finished confidently to give Focus Ferrers the lead at half time.
As the second half kicked off, it was Radars turn to exert some pressure and Rangers found themselves defending a series of corner kicks. Defensive duo Haydn Davies and Teddie Bettis were demonstrating a good understanding of each other at the back and were called upon on a number of occasions to effectively ‘sweep up’ and deny Radars any clear goal scoring opportunities on the break. Having withstood the early pressure, Rangers then began to carve out goal scoring opportunities of their own - Jack Camfield was beginning to have some success on the right flank, and a number of goal mouth scrambles ensued. Both Joshua Kitchen and Jack Camfield came close to scoring from close range but were denied by some last ditch defending and brave stops from the Radars goalie. Rangers’ pressure eventually paid off as Jack Allen doubled the lead in the 30th minute to put Focus 2 – 0 up.
With the Radars team a man down in the closing minutes of the game, Jack Allen completed his hatrick to wrap the game up for Focus Ferrers 3 - 0. Well done boys on both teams – an entertaining and closely fought game in tough conditions!
Man of the Match: Jack Camfield - tireless work up and down that right flank in both defence and attack.
