10 May 2009 Barnston Youth 2-3 U15s Hawks League Cup Final

Match report

This was a replay of the cup final played on March 13th which had ended in a 1-1 draw. That was a tight affair and this didn't disappoint either with a thrilling outcome left right until the last moment.

Barnston certainly started the sharper and their tactics were spot on in stealing an early lead. An extravagant celebration suggested they had jumped the gun (literally)lthough when they scored their second goal it looked like it could all be over without the right reaction from the Hawks. The boys got themselves organised and started to play some decent football coming close on a couple of occasions. There was no oustanding player in the first half and it was obvious that an improved display would be required to pull this out of the fire.

A non nonsense team talk and a commitment to dominate the second half produced almost immediate dividends when Ant scored the first of what would later become a hatrick. This galvanised the guys making them believe they could get back into the game and then go on. Every single player in the squad played their part and this team spirit drove them on to get the equaliser, again from Ant. Before we knew where we were, full time was over and we were into extra time just like the first match. Perhaps some self doubt crept into our opposition, but the momentum was certainly with the Hawks and with less than a minute to go, we crafted a good move which put Barnston on the back foot and in stole Ant to secure a thrilling victory. It's not often a hatrick doesn't win you man of the match but based on the performance of the team it really was a team effort in winning the Cup ! We must also thank the tremendous support we have received from families and friends over both matches.

We were without Rob and Harry T who have played a valuable part in the road to the final - thanks to both.
Squad - Alex, Jamie, Daniel, George, Harry A, Lewis, Aaron, Ellis, Michael , Anthony, Cameron , Harrison and Charlie.
With thanks to our sponsors Taylor, Viney and Marlow. The score was 3-2.
